Quality fencing to increase ewe productivity
2nd November 2005
Now that the ewes have produced and reared the lambs, their work is not necessarily done. Land improvement can be the next job.
Steep hillsides and gullies can be improved by penning a mob at 100 plus per hectare for short peiods of time. This will top and fertilise these areas without hammering the stock.
Using wide-spaced electrified sheep netting any shape or size block can be temporarily fenced in a very short time and is easy to reposition to increase the grazing area.
For success when using electrified netting follow the basic rules. Check that the shock is strong enough but not excessive. Do not allow it to short out, or the energiser to stop.
Never roll it up when removing, follow the instructions provided to ensure quick and easy use every time.
Stock can also be released to the remainder of the paddock to fill up and be re-penned to transfer fertility to these areas. This can be a very economic method to bring second class land up in production with no machinery required.
Wide spaced sheep netting has seven live horizontal strands with an earth return on the bottom. The non-electrified vertical strands are 33cm apart. All live strands are connected at each end by a metal connector. The lower live strands can be isolated in long vegetation to stop them shorting out. Rolls can be connected together, up to 25, for long runs.
At less than 5kg for a 50m roll, this netting is easy to use on steep land.
